Valdaya

Valdaya 2017, Ribera del Duero, Spain - 1.5l

£84

The flagship red from Valdaya is a taste sensation to be savoured. A full, rich and deep body offers the palate a blend of blackcurrant, leather and coffee. This is tempered by a hint of spice and cedar, however, as well as soft and refreshing tannins. The acidity is also limited, making this is a hugely drinkable and smooth wine. Valdaya is already an astounding selection, and this is certainly a name to watch - few red wines of such comparative youth offer such a satisfying experience.

ABOUT THE VINEYARD

Elena and Joaquin González founded Valdaya in Elena's home town of Ribera del Duero. After a slow beginning to their winemaking journey, the vineyard truly rose to prominence in the previous decade. Marta Ramas and Miguel Fisac, graduates of Bordeaux University and experience winemakers, joined the estate. These new faces adjusted working practices at Valdaya, countering the impact of a rain-lashed growing season and introducing micro-fermentations. As a result, just nine barrels of wine are produced by Valdaya each year - but this slavish devotion to quality over quantity reaps rewards for winemaker and consumer alike.
