Château Haut-Bailly

Ch. Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Leognan

Ch. Haut-Bailly may be produced in Bordeaux, but this red wine is considered by many to be a classic English claret. Light on the palate but rich in flavour, this red wine combines deep and rich tastes of strawberry, blackberry and cherry with a satisfyingly smoky and oak-centric aroma. The wine is full-bodied and delights the tongue, but it doesn't overstay its welcome with any lingering aftertaste. Taking the approach of tackling the tastebuds rather than launching a bludgeoning attack, this is a red wine that will last long in the memory. The 2004 vintage, in particular, has aged to perfection and permits the many and varied scents and flavours to truly make an impression.

  • Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc

As a rich, deep and fruity merlot, this wine accompanies any meats well – especially a slow-cooked joint of lamb that melts in the mouth. Sometimes, however, this wine is best enjoyed as a solitary pursuit. Relax and unwind with a glass, possibly accompanying the smoky flavours with a fine cigar.

Château Haut-Bailly is located in Pessac-Léognan, northern Bordeaux. While this territory is more commonly associated with white wine, the chateau has been steadily building a reputation as the home of stunning red. The reputation of the vineyard has been on a steep incline since the 1990s, and it's now deemed a powerhouse in wine production.
