Montonale Montunal

Montonale Montunal - 1.5l

Think white Italian wine is all bland Pinot Grigio? Think again. Lugana may not be a household name, but ignore it at your peril. The region lies close to the southern shore of Italy’s Lake Garda, and it makes some stunning white wines. This is one of them, no question. Pale yellow in colour, it’s bursting with floral and fruit aromas on the nose. You’ve got white peach, lemon zest, balsamic notes and a streak of stony minerality that is very typical of the region. On the palate, there’s a wonderful balance between fresh, bright acidity and concentrated structure. The finish is long with tingling acidity and plenty more minerality to boot.

  • 100% Turbiana

When in Lugana, do as the Luganans do. This is great with any roasted or grilled fish, but even better with aringhe alla gardesana – the Lake Garda way to cook herring.

The wine (and winery) takes its name from the small village of Montonale, historically known as Montunal. Turbiana is a native grape variety and local specialty, and this example comes from a meticulous selection of the best Turbiana grapes from the producer’s vineyards. The vines’ exposure to the sun and good ventilation ensure that the Turbiana grape can reach optimal ripeness and exhibit all its local character and personality in the glass.
